12 October 2008 Sunday Tunis

Got up at 07.30. Had breakfast at 08.30. After that we did some email etc. This morning we went to Carthage. We first walked to the end of the Avenus Bourghiba, where we took the train to Carthage-Byrsa. There we first walked to the Punic harbour wich dates back to 4th century B.C. It is a circulair harbour which was covered partiallly. This way the Punic people could easily repair their ships and the Romans couldn't see anything. After that we went to the Tophet sanctuary, where little baby's were sacrified to the gods. Their remains were burried there in sacophages. After seeing that we walked for 20 minutes to see the Museum of Carthage, which is situated on the top of a hill. In that museum are a lot of sarcophages, pottery and mosaics. Next to the museum are a lot of Roman ruins. Then we went to the Roman theatre which we reached after  walking through a luxury villa area where a few ambassy's are located. The Roman theatre was a bit to much rebuilded with new materials. But nevertheless it gave a nice impression of how it looked like. As the last we wanted to see the Roman villa's. Then we walked to the train, which left after 3 min and arrived half an hour later in Tunis.
We walked back to the hotel and sat on the terrace for a while, discussing about routes, GPS-coördinates etc. After a shower we arranged the conference room for our first meeting with the other competitors. We had a lot to talk about concening the Desert Trail 2008.
After that we had our usual meal in the hotel and we all went to bed early, because we wanted to leave early: 07.00 hours. That is because the rush hour starts shortly after that time. Before I went to bed I finished my email to the blogspot. Unfortunately I lost that email, so I am typing this again one day later.
