13 October 2008 Monday Tunis-Kairouan-Gafsa

As I told Yesterday we wanted (=we had) to get up early, that s 05.30. We checked out, took the cars from the parking place and brought them in front of the hotel. This way we could pack more easily. We left at 07.15 and got out of the city easily. Just outside Tunis we had a tankstop. Our roadbook and routes worked out fine. We drove by the aquaduct which runs from the mountains near Thuburbo Mayus to as far as Carthage. The first ruins we visited were at Thuburbo Mayus. We parked the car and in the morning light it all looked nice: the Roman ruins and the landscape that looes much like the Provence in France. After that we went to Kairouan which is a very beatifull city, that is on the Unesco list of World Heritage. We parked our cars in front of the hotel Le Kasbah. We were guided by the usual men, which brings you "by accident" to some shops of craftmenships. We also visited a Koran school and of course the Great Mosque. After that we returned to hotel Le Kasbah to have a lunch. Le kasbag is a great hotel in a transformed jail complete with walls around it and big heavy doors.
Then we went to Sbeitla where we visited the Roman ruins, which were in the best shape we have seen so far. We walked around for a while and went on to our endpoint of the day: Gafsa. We came from a flat area and Gafsa is located against a mountain ridge. The Jugurtha hotel is fantastic and has indeed big swimming pooles. We had a shower and a beer and went to dinner. We discussed the next day and everybody went to bed early.
