16 october 2008, thursday, Ksar Ghilane-Tripoli

Today we woke up at 06.00 am to enjoy the beautiful early morning. We climbed the tower of Pansea which is a good viewpoint to watch over our campsite and the magnificant desert around our overnight stay. We were there at sunset. Departure at 08.15: the first part of the deserttrack we planned to follow was a sandy road full of water, the water came out of the ground and gave us an exiting start. None of us got stuck. After a few km of poor tarmac we drove over a washboord road through the middle of nowhere. We just followed our roadbook and it works out excellent. We drove through Beni khaddache and later on we descended from the high plain to the lowlands near the coast. We had a wonderful view over there. We all feel very prvileged to be on this magnifisant Desert Trail, surrounded by wonderfull rallyfriends.Yesterday after noon I recieved the copy of our entrance permit of our Libyan agent by email and printed it out at the office of Pansea. At 12.00 am we will meet Khalid at the Tunisian Libyan border for the check in of all the participants and our vehicles. The last before the border we drove along the coast through a flat landscape. Just before the border there were a lot of markets and money changers waving with their bank notes. Then the big adventure began: the crossing of he Tunisian-Libyan border. The Tunisian side was relative simple ans easy. I phoned our contact man at the other side of the border: he was waiting for us. He took care of all the formalities at the Libyan border. Everything went smoothly and at last we got our Libyan license plates. We all fixed them to our cars, but then occured a little problem. One person had forgotten to take care of an Arabic translation in his passport. He had to go back to Sfax in Tunisia to get a translation. The rest went behind the guide and tourist police man to Tripoli. The traffic is crazy in Libya. Cars pass you left, right, etc and they realy drive fast! At 18.30 hour we arrived at the hotel. We checked in, had a shower and had dinner in this fabulous hotel situated right next to the Marcus Aurelius Arch. At the reception we met Hadi Bkai, the tour operator who helped us booking hotels, guides, etc. After dinner we went for our cars and took them to a guarded parking. We walked back to the hotel through the lively centre at 22.00 hour. Crazy driving, lots of people and party's for people who were going to be married next day. At midnight we came to the hotel and went to bed.
