18 october 2008, saturday, Tripoli-Ghadames

We got up at 05.30 and had breakfast at 06.00. After that at 06.30 we went for the cars at the parking 10 min away. We left at 08.00. We followed our guide and tourist police man in their Toyota Landcruiser. Outside Tunis we stopped for a tankstop, so everybody could fill up for the long (600 km) journey of today. The roads are all good tarmac so we can speed. We came along Al Aziziyah and Yafran. We stopped at Qasr al Hajj. This is a kind of castle, but is mainly intented to store food and other goods in a safe way. All separate rooms for the different familys. Untill Nalut we followed the mountain ridge. The next stop was Nalut, where we visited the castle, which is also a storage facility. It is strategicly positioned on the edge of a mountain ridge. After that we had lunch a few streets further on, also on the mountain ridge. Then we went further to Darj, mainly following the Great Man River project. The water for this project comes from Ghadames, out of wells 500m deep. We tasted it later on. In Darj we went right to our endpoint of the day: Ghadames. We ended up in our hotel Ben Yedder. It is close to the old city, so we can walk to there. We unpacked and checked in. After a shower we had dinner in the hotel. Here we met our touroperator Hadi Bkai again. After that we were invited to the Festival that evening in hotel Dar Ghadames. It was a Berber festival held in the open air. We walked up and down from our hotel, which is half an hour each way. When we came back in the hotel it was almost midnight and time to go to bed.
